Starter Motor ?
#1
Please excuse the English posting, my German is not good enough for technical questions.

My E30 325iA has now failed to start on two occasions. Both times were very similar. First a long drive (1hr) to a car show. Then very slow stop-start traffic to get into the show (checking tickets, finding the right club stand etc). Then once I stopped I needed to start the car within about 5 minutes to move it into position on the stand. Both times all I got was a loud click and nothing else. This is then followed by general laughter and abuse from other classic car owners, followed by pushing the car into place. Then later in the day it starts perfectly as if nothing had happened.
What's wrong ? Old starter motor overheating ? Starter motor solenoid overheating ?
Darkness gone, Tronic gone, Solo gone, go Darkness, go Frozen ! What's my F11 called ?

Bon courage

Hi Nick,
i would say the Starter is fucked, but first i would check the Groundcable between Engine and Chassis. Might be shitty Grounding or loose.

Hi Nick,

Typical situated starter failure. To change the starter will be the simplest way to mind any other analysis. Most times the coles of the starter motor are wasted. The magnetcontact might be old as well and some times the contacts for power to the starter motor would not be reached by the magnetic kernel.
At the end if the day ist is easier to change the whole starter instead of changing, mounting, testing the components.

Needless to say that changing an M20 starter motor is a real pain in the ass.

Super, danke.
Gruss
