What viscosity of motor oil do you use for M10 and M20 ?

Macht es Sinn, im gegensatz zu unserem Klima in extrem kalten Gefilden (Sankt Petersburg) eine Nummer dünner zu nehmen, z.B. 10W40?

I use Mazola or Olive Oil. Olive Oil must be extra virgin and cold pressed!

In our BMW 2002 (also M10) is only Castrol 10W-60.

Kai is right - which grade of oil you use should take into account the ambient temperature conditions, aswell as the engine.

Which type of oil - mineral, synthetic, mixtures, esters etc - is a matter for you to discuss with your doctor, priest and lawyer

Ralf doesn't agree with my choice of viscosity.

Good question - it largely depends on your religion. I wouldn't use any of the above, they look like old recommendations to me. Manufacturers recommendations are based on the oil types easily available when the cars were new - they rarely go back 20 years later and update them.

It seems to me in view of these data , on oil with viscosity 5W40 the engine will be more noisy to work.
